"Totem
II" - wood, paint & wax - 1998
Todd
McGreevy
Mixed
Media Sculptures
Installation
views from "Kanga@TheMez" Exhibition, November
1998, Downtown Davenport, IA
Currently
on view in Downtown Davenport
Art Under Glass thru May 30, 1999.
These works
were created with salvaged items from the Armstrong
Ladder Factory & Illinois Oil Co. The 100 Year old
facility was demolished last spring. McGreevy utilizes
the wooden machine pattern forms and other found metal
objects to create one-of-a-kind free standing sculptures
and installations.
What's an
Object's URP?
- by Todd McGreevy
Call it the
thrill of the hunt. Call it recycling. Call it found
objects. It's the joy of discovery.
Discover these
and more in the things around you.

My scultpures
are an attempt to discover the universal repurposing
potential (URP) of the area's (Quad Cities') discarded
and recycled materials and items, such as forgotten
machining parts casting patterns, made of wood in the
1930's and 40's. These dormant objects were salvaged from
the Armstrong Ladder Factory and Illinois Oil Company
pattern works demolished last year in downtown
Rock Island, IL, along with thousands of mailing label
indita plates, with addresses from factories, wholesalers
and retailers from across the U.S. (Please select an
address card for yourself.)
Successful
sculpture can operate on two levels:
1) Provoke
others to discover their own interpretation of an
object's URP for themselves.
2) Utilize an
object's URP to interpret an audience's cultural,
environmental, social or political heritage.
It is my goal
to create works that reflect these two attributes.
